Taalklas De Waaier

When children from foreign countries arrive in the Netherlands, they need to learn Dutch before they can attend a normal primary school. To learn Dutch, they can attend Taalklas De Waaier.

For 30 years, De Waaier (founded in August 1993) has provided classes for newcomers to our area. We currently provide classes at De Wegwijzer and De Kring primary schools.

De Waaier is specialised in helping children aged 6 to 12 years who have been in the Netherlands for less than a year. In just one year, we can teach these children the basics of the Dutch language so they are able to speak, read and write Dutch well enough to attend a normal school. In addition to Dutch, we teach arithmetic and other subjects.

Our approach is to cater to the individual needs and abilities of children within the groups.
It is very important that children feel safe and protected when they attend our classes. Often, they have experienced troubling and traumatic events in their country of origin. Our staff has extensive experience in helping children who do not yet speak Dutch.

Gradually settling in

In addition to teaching Dutch, we introduce children to many aspects of living in the Netherlands and contribute to their integration into Dutch society. Children attend our language classes 5 days a week. During the month before they transfer to a normal primary school, they spend one day a week at their new school to settle in there.
